This is the 2022 re-mastered release of our 2001 album.

Sugarbeat was recorded during a two-year transition phase between fully equipped studios. With most of our fancy gear boxed up for the time being, producing a more minimal album seemed not only sensible but appealing, and a tempting challenge to boot.

Guitars, bass, some simple percussion. No synths, no samplers. Not necessarily "unplugged" given the use of electric instruments and effects, but as near as could be. In fairness, the no-samplers rule was broken once, but for a few bars only when violins and cellos were later added to Scarborough Fair (for added notoriety, it's also the sole vocal track on the album). All other sonic weirdness was spawned by plucked, shaken or struck real objects, and in one case (Descent) by an overclocked Jew's harp.

For years Sugarbeat remained our "forgotten album". Deemed even less fan-friendly than the rest of our work, it was rarely mentioned, let alone played, in the presence of unsuspecting listeners. But revisiting the album track by track in 2022 changed all that. Deep-cleaned and fully serviced, the songs now seem to have found a new purpose that should at last see them slip out the garden gate. Bon voyage!
