With open eyes and deep blue sky Committed to freedom Directions ahead, no U-turn, it read Just follow the road to the Big Sleep At home and at work at night in the murk The dream grows The dangerous lute, ripe forbidden fruit Is hidden no longer Sleeping... Taking control Lend a helping hand Head in the clouds, legs in shifting sand Shifting through the Big Sleep Turning around Both feet on the ground Dark blue skies above As red rocks share secrets I fly like a dove

Mary's Notes 05:58
Tough words, tough world Speak less, say more Hear not crap talk Cut through to the core Been there, done that, seen it all before The more it hurts the more it pays Take no umbrella on those rainy days Don't mind rough stuff Good laugh, thanks guv Stay cool, walk tall Another guy can take the fall. Drive by night and smile all day Careful about what not to say Pressing flesh while biting tongue The hook is in, the deal is done Round after round, to raise some cheers See how that old demon disappears Drive all day, arrive by night That lovely old demon is asleep by the fireside One last look at the poem book with Mary’s notes below Forgiveness, well it's business Don't let it show Disguises wear thin and patience runs out Those friends in high places long since lost their clout The promise of riches has gone up in flames A fast car and a habit is all that remains The nearest and dearest never broke the secret code A voice on the mobile, vague and so remote Tough world, man’s world, so much to achieve Fast talk, big talk, not much to believe One last look at the poem book with Mary’s notes below Forgiveness, well it's business Don't let it show

Atlantis 06:43
The coastline draws near, so very far below On silent wings, the eagle sees the beacons glow The pillars are trembling, the fires still burn Ships heading for harbour will never return Goodness and culture, justice and peace The most loyal subjects, a reign that would never cease But the throne is deserted, soon the ocean shall be king Only eagles tell the story of every last life vanishing Blades of steel lace air with smoke This bird can breathe, all others must choke Jaws of fire are eating five square miles every hour Leaving islands of charcoal that Earth will soon devour Cool cars, hot nights Dear houses, cheap flights Where once were streets there now are boats Some count the lives, some count the votes The bets in life’s casino could be rising pretty soon The molten rock beneath us prepares again for doom Ancient instincts rise again, the core of life laid bare Atlantis lost and found again, and once more in our care

Connecting the Dots (pt1): Welcome to this life Dig this crazy jive Blue, red, white, it rocks We connect the dots Hello – goodbye Cool Jerusalem (pt3): Receding fast, there's clear blue water Obscured by visions, and bricks and mortar Air cuts air and words pierce hearts Same old compass, brand new charts In my cocoon I feel OK I wonder what the papers say Impatient crowds at every station Bound for the heart of this proud nation Increasing speed, there's fuel to burn A whistle blast at every turn In my cocoon I hear no sound The men in black look so profound Line up, sign up Let us fill your cup The voices from the mantelpiece Are just bad memories The mist is clearing on pastures new New Jerusalem slowly comes into view But the feast has been scavenged and the lion was killed His heart's been transplanted and the gravy's been spilled In first class seats I feel cocooned Out of reach to dress the wound Line up, sign up Let us fill your cup The voices from the mantelpiece Are just bad memories The Beach (pt6): And when at last the ravens sleep The night winds stroke the ground beneath our feet

about

The definitive Bandcamp release of our 1999 album.

Some maintain it was this album that dragged Blue Flux out of comfortable obscurity by finally earning us some positive reviews. Which is true, but not the full story. The Beach was lucky enough to make friends with another ally on its original release in September 1999, namely: the internet. A strange beast which back then was far less profit-hungry, regimented, or polarised. Hence pioneering music platforms like mp3-dot-com appeared genuinely grateful that some trusting bands would actually choose to upload their cherished tracks. This sense of adventure readily infected many listeners as well, many of whom seemed quite happy to listen to entire albums, not just a few trending clips. Novelty? Certainly. But many fans also enjoyed their buzz from actively changing the future of music, and surely for the better.

Feel free to interpret that outcome at will. What remains incontestable however is that The Beach emerged at a momentous point in time. And made no bones about it, as the main theme of the album hopefully still communicates. As much in awe as cautiously critical of the looming new millennium. Surely there never was a better reason to musically let rip. And so we did.

A little recording history – please skip if nerd-averse: while computers were still clunky and DAWs known to ornithologists only, 1999 wasn’t the audio stone age you may believe. Even our studio already featured some trippy gear back then, including 8-track digital recorder, 32MB (!) sampler with SCSI drives (!!), cutting-edge synths, a stand-alone MIDI sequencer, stacks of effects, and DAT mastering. Decent capacitor mics had also become affordable – another reason maybe why this album sports a lot more vocals all of a sudden.

And yet, re-mastering these tracks in 2022 still felt like opening a time capsule. Luckily, no leaks. With much of our 1999 gear long since recycled responsibly, work was restricted to the stereo masters. But even they seemed to respond quite well to 21st century TLC. Despite some minor trims where needed and a fun-size injection of audio-steroids, each song pretty much kept its original identity. Much of the cover art showed its age though and thus required up-scaling, and rework. Finally, 1000 Years, the album’s genre-defining centrepiece, is presented here as a single 22-minute track to avoid the inevitable loss of continuity when streamed. For those interested, full timing details are provided in the song’s info pane.

A sign of its time it may well be. But some have since ventured that with subjects like identity, the environment, and gender stereotyping, The Beach somehow also touched down a little ahead of the curve. Which is the bit where the artist departs, muttering, “Well, that’s for you to judge.”

All tracks composed and produced by Tom Berlin and performed by Blue Flux. Recorded at Bigger Hog Studio, Wales, April 1998 to July 1999. Re-mastered at Holt Studio, Scotland, in July 2022.

Thanks to Gerd Propp for sound guidance, to Steve Ogden for getting me started on the Atlantis idea, to Mum for leaving a voicemail at the right time, and to King Charles I for sticking his neck out just a wee bit too far.
Also many thanks to everyone at mp3-dot-com who back in 2000 voted Mary's Notes to the top of their prog-rock charts for a whole giddy week.
